About Lund
Lund is a very old city, first mentioned around year 990, has had an Episcopal seat since 1060 (the cathedral dating from early 12th century), a center for higher education since 1085 (Katedralskolan, now an upper secondary school). The University of Lund was founded in 1668.
Lund is also a city of contrasts, with the medieval central parts still in use, side by side with international corporations like Tetra Pak, Ericsson Mobile Platforms, Sony Ericsson, Alfa Laval, Gambro, AstraZeneca, Axis AB and BTJ, the leading supplier of media services, in modern architecture. The University, the Institute of Technology and the University Hospital play an important part in the community and the corporate life. The science park Ideon is a meeting place for visionaries, entrepreneurs and for venture capital. This is where many global leaders in the fields of mobile telephony, IT, life science and clean tech have started their journey. The international research facility ESS, being built in the north of Lund, will attract thousands of scientists from all over the world.
Culture and knowledge are central to Lund. With the old university and cathedral, the innovative corporate culture and engaged inhabitants, Lund is a modern city, but rich in tradition. Many authors, musicians, composers, et al have lived in Lund. Among museums, the Museum of Sketches (sketches for a "monumental art and art in the public") deserves mentioning - the only in its kind worldwide. Of course there are lots of restaurants of all kinds and cafés throughout the city.
